First week of second year and our first project is for the BBC! I’m working with Final year Jordan, fellow second year student Méabh and fresher Veronika. For this project we are re-designing the transitional shot of BBC Northern Ireland’s TV Channel logo:
It will be between 5-10seconds long and it has to resolve back to the logo (of which we can’t change the dimensions).
We were given the brief and what we deciphered from it was that they were looking for something a little different and quirky to bring the logo to life! So we brainstormed buzzwords, themes and ideas:
We wanted to make ours a little funny. Elements we are including are our Norn Iron slang, famous people (Liam Neeson, James Nesbit…) and some iconic imagery.
One way of doing this is using still images over live-action backdrops, sort of an animation with still images, Fonejacker style:
Méabh found this After Effects tutorial. Terry Gilliam’s work on Monty Python:
Adverts with the look we’re going for:
We thought we could have Liam Neeson delivering his famous “Taken” line (in a harsh Norn Iron accent) but change it slightly to make a joke, maybe using visual puns.
If not Neeson we could have fish (big fish industry over here) on an ice table talking to each other and making fish puns, in the same style – like the news anchor from Spongebob:
Whatever we choose for our imagery we still want to put a joke in. Once the joke is set up, the logo will transition in and then the punchline will be dropped and suddenly the clip ends.
We watched a few videos of logo animations and picked out the aspects that we liked:
We liked the shine effects, parts of the logo could start from behind the camera and move in towards the centre of the screen (we want the logo to form in the middle, not just move in from a certain direction).
Some After Effects tutorials on some cool effects:

We’ve decided to not add any fancy effects to the logo because we want to stick with the amateurish theme.
The imagery we have decided to use is cows standing in a field – telling a cow pun. Our mock ups:
The response from fellow students tended to favour the cows as Liam’s sketch seemed a bit too crowded and we didn’t really have any solid dialogue for it.
Rosie kindly donated some of her lovely photos of cows for us to play around with:
Different cut-out styles:
Our cow is made of two stock images, here’s more mock-ups incorporating the style above:
We decided to combine the outline and paper style and Jordan managed to create most of the layer on photoshop and then I put them into After Effects.
Here is our Ident!
